Why are you excited to join Austin Retina?
The clinical team at Austin Retina is world-class, and I am excited and honored to be able to join this remarkable organization. As an established clinician here in Austin, I have long been impressed by the integrity and compassion of my colleagues at Austin Retina, and to have the opportunity to work alongside them is truly an honor. The resources available at our clinics will allow my patients access to the most advanced treatment to prevent or limit vision loss, including the chance to participate in cutting-edge research studies for new treatments that have the potential to be life changing. I am also thrilled to be involved in the medical education programs at the University of Texas Dell Medical School and the new retinal surgery fellowship program at Austin Retina. Training our future physicians is deeply rewarding, as it offers a chance to give back the experience I have accumulated during my career to the next generation of specialists.
Why are you passionate about what you do?
My fascination with visual science and the human eye dates back to my childhood and has continued to grow and blossom over the course of my life. At an early point in my academic career, I became involved with research that has become the underpinning of some of the most promising therapies of today and the future, and I continued to pursue this as I progressed through my training. Watching these advancements come into fruition has been inspirational. During my training and career, I have seen advancements in the treatment of eye disease that have been nearly miraculous in their effectiveness and have enabled millions upon millions of patients to preserve their vision. To participate as a physician in offering these treatment approaches and be entrusted by my patients with the medical and surgical care of their vision allows the development of a priceless and intimate bond that is unique to my specialty. Helping patients effectively navigate through treatment of conditions causing severe vision loss demands humility and compassion, and the experience I have gained in doing so has benefited me in all aspects of my personal and family life. These are just a few of the reasons that I remain passionate about my profession, and I could not imagine a more rewarding or fulfilling career.
What do you want patients to know about you?
When I am not busy with patient care, my primary focus is on spending time with my wife and children. I have extended family spread across two continents and am grateful for my children to have exposure to a multicultural family. I feel that my own experience with different cultures has helped me to better navigate the complexities of our society and politics, and I want my children to also benefit from this diversity of perspective. It has been fascinating to observe the influence of technology on society and culture in recent years, both for better and for worse, and I feel a strong responsibility to help guide my kids through the maze of decisions which face them in these unprecedented times. I have lived with my family in Austin since 2012 and am grateful to be a part of such a vibrant community, getting to know folks from all walks of life, both professionally and personally. I look forward to the future as we continue to put down our roots in the local community.
